Controlling Weeds |
|
Your choice of weed control methods in flower plantings depends on your energy, time, budget, and personal taste. Weeds in small areas can be controlled by using a hoe or hand trowel. Cut the weeds off near the soil surface while they are still small. Avoid digging into the soil, as you may churn up new weed seeds or injure flower plant roots. A 2-3 inch deep mulch can be helpful in both small and large areas. Organic materials, such as leaves, wood chips, compost or grass clippings may be used. Make sure the grass clippings have not received recent applications of weed killers as these might harm your plants. Inorganic mulches such as stone, gravel, black plastic or landscape fabric are suggested for established plantings or perennial beds where less yearly planting is likely to be done. Edging materials made from plastic, metal or wood can be used to both prevent lawn grass from spreading into the beds and prevent your mulch from escaping into the lawn. Cornell
