Karen Duboy of Warsaw selected as 2009 Wyoming County 4-H Leader of the Year

The 2009 Wyoming County 4-H Leaders of the Year Award was presented at the Wyoming County 4-H Recognition Banquet on November 14th. Volunteers are nominated for these awards by 4-H members, parents, or fellow leaders.

Karen Duboy of Warsaw is presented the 2009 4-H Leader of the Year Award by Cory Crowell of Arcade.

Karen Duboy of Warsaw has been a Volunteer 4-H Leader in Wyoming County for 13 years. She is the leader of the Hootin' Caprines 4-H Club, the county-wide club for youth interested in goats. Karen was nominated for this honor by club member Cory Crowell of Arcade. In his nomination, Cory stated that "Karen has helped me and other 4-H'ers with our goats. She goes out of her way to help others, and she makes great goat milk fudge!" Under Karen's leadership, the 4-H Goat Program in Wyoming County has grown significantly. She encourages members to become involved with many aspects of the 4-H program, including educational events, public speaking, and showing their animals. Wyoming County 4-H is proud to recognize Karen with the 2009 Leader of the Year Award.

4-H Educator Roxanne Dueppengiesser presents a Friend of 4-H Award to Sandy Pirdy of Creekside Fabrics in Arcade.

Creekside Fabrics, Quilts, and Yarn has been a longtime supporter of 4-H Programs in Wyoming County. Sandy Pirdy, a past Wyoming County 4-H member, has contributed time and donated products to encourage youth with their sewing projects.

4-H Volunteer Donna Almeter of Strykersville presents a Friend of 4-H Award to Wayne Sage of Perry.

Wayne Sage of Perry has been involved with the 4-H program in Wyoming County as a member, leader, parent, and grandparent. He has been an integral part of the Wyoming County Meat Animal Show and Sale since the beginning of the program.

Wyoming County 4-H is proud to recognize the contributions of Creekside Fabrics and Wayne Sage. The program is fortunate to have such wonderful friends!

These awards are presented in memory of the late Harold Upton of Warsaw. Although he was never a member of 4-H, he was involved in a variety of ways over many years. He recognized the value of 4-H and its importance building strong, well educated youth for the future of Wyoming County. In the weeks before his death, he had the chance to talk with his wife Donna about how memorial gifts would be directed. Through the generosity of his friends and relatives who gave in his memory, Harold Upton Memorial Friend of 4-H Awards are possible. These awards are a real tribute to Harold. The recipients, like Harold, recognize 4-H as a very valuable asset to the youth of Wyoming County, and give their support to 4-H programs.

What's Cooking in 4-H?

The Wyoming County 4-H Produced in NY State Food Contest was held on Saturday, October 24, 2008 at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Education Center in Warsaw.

Congratulations to Wyoming County 4-H Produced in NY State Food Contest winners Leah Parker of Perry with her Crunchy Vegetable Cheese Ball recipe and Preston Skillman of Wyoming on his winning Corn Chowder, and senior division winner, Heather Yuhnke of Wyoming with her Corn-Stuffed Butterfly Chops.

In an effort to learn about nutrition and practice food presentation skills, 4-H members presented silent food demonstrations, promoting items from the Empire State. The major ingredient of the recipe featured a product grown or produced in New York State - such as fruits, vegetables, dairy, maple or meat. With agriculture being up-most important to the economy of not only Wyoming County, but New York State, the food contest allows an opportunity to promote the use and consumption of agriculture products either grown or produced in New York State! Participants were also encouraged to consider the U.S. Dietary Guidelines when selecting their recipes.

During the silent demonstrations, in which contestants were allowed 50 minutes, 4-H'ers were judged on organization, neatness, proper use of equipment and manner of preparing the food. The finished product was also judged on nutritional value, appearance, and taste!

Ten junior members (8-12 years) and two senior members (13-19 years) participated in this year's contest. Junior members included: Briana Broadwell of Castile; Sarah Wilkie of Silver Springs; Taylor Wilkie of Silver Springs; Grace Kunze of Wyoming; Abigail Parker of Perry; Leah Parker of Perry; Allysa Pascoe of Perry; Chelsea Pascoe of Perry; Preston Skillman of Wyoming, and Abby Skillman of Wyoming.

Senior members included: Eliza Cox of Perry and Heather Yuhnke of Wyoming.

Congratulations to junior winners (8 & 9 year old category), Leah Parker with her Crunchy Vegetable Cheese Ball recipe and Preston Skillman (10, 11 & 12 year old category) on his winning Corn Chowder. For the senior division (13 years old and up), this year's first place winner was Heather Yuhnke with her Corn-Stuffed Butterfly Chops.

This year's participants will be invited to prepare their recipes at the Produced in New York State Foods Presentation at the 2010 New York State Fair in Syracuse!

Judges for the contest were Sarah Youngers, Arcade; and Penny Smith, Arcade; who judged the demonstration portion; and Amy Berry, Darien Center; and Aimee Berkemeier, Wyoming, who were the tasting judges.

We hope you enjoy the participants recipes contained in this booklet!
