      • Worm composting is using worms to recycle food scraps and other organic material into a valuable soil amendment called vermicompost, or worm compost. Master Gardener, Betsy Moll will instruct us on how to turn our winter kitchen scraps into useable garden compost.

    • Business Planning Workshop Series Begins
      Mondays, November 9, 16, 23 & December 7

      • Cost $100
      • Business planning helps farm businesses to focus on their future and develop plans for prosperity. Whether starting an agricultural business, expanding an existing farm or developing a new enterprise to diversify, business planning can help. Participants will:
        • explore their available resources,
        • define a marketing plan,
        • estimate revenues and costs of production,
        • evaluate the feasibility of starting or changing a farm or rural business
      • The workbook, “Building a Sustainable Business – A Guide to Developing a Business Plan for Farms and Rural Businesses” will channel planning efforts. Four Western New York sites will link via interactive video-conference for participants to receive educational support while writing their own plan.

      • The farm is located about 5 miles south of Dryden, NY on Slaterville Road off of Route 38 near Harford (click for map). It is the home of 250 Dorset, 75 Finnsheep, 325 Finn x Dorset, and 100 1/4 East Friesian X 3/4 Dorset ewes. Click here for an aerial photograph.
      • Topics to be covered vary with the season. In general, they include: Breeding, Lambing Management, Feeding, Grazing and winter grazing, including maintenance of electric fence, and marketing.
      • Registration is required. There is no charge but lunch is not provided. Bring your own or plan to drive to Dryden (five miles) for lunch.

    • Maple Confection Review and Development Workshop

      at Valley Chapel Church, 3415 S. Main St. (Rt. 19), Warsaw
      • Instructor: Steve Childs, NYS Maple Specialist
      • This update will review: basics, invert sugar, making crystals the right size, managing flavor, managing samples of maple products, using maple in a real soda machine in addition to introducing: maple taffy, maple candy apple, maple cheesecake, maple wafer cookies, and maple nougat. Participants will also receive an update to the most recent maple confections manual.
      • Cost: $20 per person (workshop fills up quickly so be sure to register quickly)

The Innovations in Agriculture conference is designed to assist New York farms in integrating energy-efficient and sustainable production methods to profit from new opportunities arising from these challenges.
      • Topics include: how future farms will adapt to climate change; agriculture's role in the development of renewable fuels for heating & transportation; the spectrum of controlled environment agriculture: current research and best practices; energy efficiency opportunities for farms; the current status of the Anaerobic Digester program; and federal and state funding opportunities.

      • This day-long seminar for dairy farm owners, managers, and employees will focus on managing health risks of the dairy herd. It will address milk quality, disease prevention, foot health, and animal welfare. Discussion of the NYS Cattle Health Assurance Program for managing issues related to herd heath risk will give dairy farm operators a chance to see how this program benefits dairies that use it.
