      • Business planning helps farm businesses to focus on their future and develop plans for prosperity. Whether starting an agricultural business, expanding an existing farm or developing a new enterprise to diversify, business planning can help. Participants will:
        • explore their available resources,
        • define a marketing plan,
        • estimate revenues and costs of production,
        • evaluate the feasibility of starting or changing a farm or rural business
      • The workbook, “Building a Sustainable Business – A Guide to Developing a Business Plan for Farms and Rural Businesses” will channel planning efforts. Four Western New York sites will link via interactive video-conference for participants to receive educational support while writing their own plan.

      • Topics to be covered vary with the season. In general, they include: Breeding, Lambing Management, Feeding, Grazing and winter grazing, including maintenance of electric fence, and marketing.
      • Registration is required. There is no charge but lunch is not provided. Bring your own or plan to drive to Dryden (five miles) for lunch.

      • Instructor: Steve Childs, NYS Maple Specialist
      • This update will review: basics, invert sugar, making crystals the right size, managing flavor, managing samples of maple products, using maple in a real soda machine in addition to introducing: maple taffy, maple candy apple, maple cheesecake, maple wafer cookies, and maple nougat. Participants will also receive an update to the most recent maple confections manual.
      • Cost: $20 per person (workshop fills up quickly so be sure to register quickly)

      • Does My Horse Need Supplements? A horse owner’s visit to the feed or tack store can be overwhelming if you walk down the supplement aisle. The choices are boundless, the manufacture’s claims are miraculous, but the research supporting these claims is unclear for many of today’s feed supplements. In this hard economic environment, horse owners need to be sure they are getting the most for their money when it comes to their horse’s feeding program. Dr. Carey Williams will help demystify supplements so that you can feed your horse cost effectively with confidence. Dr. Williams will discuss a horse’s vitamin and mineral, joint, calming, herbal and various other supplements, when supplements might be beneficial, and how to use science based information to determine if your horse needs a feed supplement.

    • Wyoming County Dairy Institute presents
      QuickBooks for Dairy Accounting
      Location: TBD
      • Participants will learn how to effectively use QuickBooks to organize their accounting systems to provide the information needed for making sound management decisions.
      • A standardized chart of accounts (COA) designed specifically for dairy businesses will be provided to all participants. Instructors will teach the class how to: restore a standardized COA to their computer; personalize the COA for their operation; set up new accounts within the standardized COA; make deposits and write checks; implement an accrual accounting system through accounts payable and receivable features; reconcile accounts; search for specific transactions; evaluate the accuracy of their system using key reports; and generate reports for business analysis.

    • Equine Genetics 101 -- FREE WEBCAST --

      • Recent advances in genetic technology, starting with the sequencing of the human genome in 2001, have led to a much greater understanding of genetics. Scientists and physicians are recognizing the role of genetics not only in visible traits but more importantly in invisible traits that have a great influence on health and disease. The same techniques used to sequence the human genome are now being applied to domestic animal species, including the horse. The equine genome was completely sequenced in early 2007. In the past two years, researchers have developed the genetic tools necessary to research both simple and complex genetic traits in horses.
