-Interactive Tunnel Ventilation Program
(updated 4/17/06) An updated version of the tunnel ventilation
system design and economic assessment on-line web program for freestall
and tie stall dairy barns has been posted. The new version features
updated fan performance data for 11 fan manufactures with over 140
different tunnel ventilation fans to choose from. All fan data used
by the program to perform the calculations was developed by BESS Labs,
an independent fan testing laboratory at the University of Illinois
at Urbana Champaign. Additionally, the user can input their own fan
data if desired.
The program will determine the number of fans needed to properly tunnel
ventilate a barn based on input data provided by the user. It will
also calculate key economic data such as break-even sustain milk production
required based on the capital investment and annual operating and
maintenance costs. This version also allows the user to e-mail the
output page to a client or themselves. Users can contact Curt Gooch
at cag26@cornell.edu if they
have any questions.

- National Outstanding
Young Farmers Program
Application Deadline is August 1st
Today's farmer is an entrepreneur in a complex agribusiness. He or
she must understand all aspects of farming, including technology,
farm implements, and other equipment used in today's operations. He
or she must also comprehend the complexities of producing the high
volume and quality crops or livestock demanded by consumers
worldwide, while not running afoul of expanding environmental regulations.
The purpose of the Outstanding Young Farmers program is to bring
about a greater interest in the farmer, to foster better urban-rural
relations
through the understanding of the farmers' problems, to develop
an appreciation of their contributions and achievements, and to
inform the agribusiness community of the growing urban awareness
of farmers' importance and impact on the American economy.
As the farmer's business has changed, so has his or her involvement
in the community. Today's farmer has become an active citizen,
participating in everything from local and state government to civic
groups and charitable organizations. It is not only fitting that farmers
be honored for their contributions and achievementsit is essential.
This award has been established to recognize outstanding achievements
in agriculture as well as community involvement.
