Although the process of making hay is based on scientific principles, it simply takes experience to know when hay is “dry”; and familiarity with ones machinery to produce a “good” bale. Currently, moisture meters do not work very well on hay. Every farmer modifies the hay making process to suit his/her needs. The objective is to quickly dry the hay down sufficient for baling, while loosing as few leaves as possible, and preventing as little soil as possible from being brought into the hay.
