Washington County Farms Showcased in Farm Guide

In the spring of 2003, the Agricultural Economic Development (AED) Program was awarded a Northeast Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) Program Partnership Grant called "Successful Direct Marketing Strategies for Agricultural Producers of Washington County". The grant had three goals: 1.) to identify farms in Washington County interested in marketing, 2.) enhance and continue direct marketing programs, and 3.) develop a Washington County farm guide which was recently unveiled at the Washington County Fair this past August.

Through the project, farms, at no charge, could extend their marketing power and increase their visibility to consumers by being included in the guide. Consumers have been provided with a free, easy-to-use reference. Many thanks to Sharon Bozovsky, David Campbell, Colleen Converse, Carl and Diana Deppe, Winifred Getty, Cathy Hamlin, Barbara Lapan, Margorie Mohn, Meg Southerland, Bonnie Smith, and Emily Strader for their help with the project.

The Washington County Farm Guide includes contact information and a description of over 100 farms offering fresh fruits and vegetables, pick-your-own, Christmas trees, plants and flowers, maple syrup, farm raised meats, dairy and horse farms, fiber producing animals, roadside stands, and retail farm stores. By using the guide, people will learn about our rich agriculture tradition while having fun by taking advantage of the activities and events that many farms offer such as: an open house, a tour, a festival, a wagon ride, or visits by appointment.

The Farm Guide features a full county locator map, Washington County agricultural facts, a list of yearly agricultural events, information on how to buy local products, and tips on how to use the guide. The Farm Guide features an original artwork done by Washington County folk artist Will Moses.

20,000 copies of the farm guide are being distributed free of charge throughout the county and the region. The farm guide is available at the Washington County Cornell Cooperative Extension office or call 1-800-548-0881 to receive a copy.
