Think Spring! Winter Workshop Series Returns in 2008
“Four fun and informative seminars for home gardener’s to choose from”
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County Master Gardener Program is offering a series of workshops during February and March to help the avid home gardener get prepared for spring.
Classes will be held on Thursdays February 14 and February 21, and Thursdays March 6 and March 20. All classes will be from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at the Business Resource Center (BRC), 1 Development Court, Kingston in room 124. Participants may choose the class or classes they are most interested in or sign up for the entire series. The fee for the series is $50 for all four; individual classes are $15. Class sizes are limited. Pre-registration is required.

Understanding Northeast Coniferous Evergreens
Date: Thursday, February 14, 2008
Instructor: Eli Joseph-Hunter, is the yard manager at The Phantom Gardener. He has been in the nursery business for nearly 15 years and is an avid tree collector.
Description: Participants will learn about the different types of coniferous evergreens that grow in the Northeast and gain a broader understanding of this much admired class of trees as well as their place in the landscape. That ‘pine tree’ you have been referring to, just might be a spruce.
The Garden Trellis

Instructor: Ferris Cook, is an award winning writer and illustrator of three gardening books: The Garden Trellis, Garden Dreams, and Remembered Gardens.
Description: Ferris will guide us in a practical discussion of how to add height to your garden by building supports and selecting vines to cultivate in an exploration of “vertical gardening”. The Garden Trellis can help gardeners create a simple, vertical accent whether for a small city plot or for acres of countryside planting.
My Weedless Garden

Instructor: Lee Reich, PhD is an avid gardener who, after almost a decade in plant and soil research with the USDA and Cornell University, turned to writing, lecturing, and consulting. He is the author of several gardening books including, “Weedless Gardening”
Description: My “weedless gardening” system is an integrated system that involves minimizing soil disturbance, avoiding soil compaction, maintaining a soil cover, and pinpoint watering. These principles and practices will benefit the soil beneath trees and shrubs, as well as flower and vegetable gardens.
Designing Borders for Sun & Shade

Instructor: Bob Hyland, is a nurseryman, garden writer, and consultant. Along with partner Andrew Beckman, garden editor for Martha Stewart Living, he owns and operates Loomis Creek Nursery in Hudson, NY. Hyland is the author of Brooklyn Botanical Gardens Hand Book, “Designing Borders for Sun & Shade”.
Description: Learn how to use and site exuberant native and exotic flowering, fruiting, and foliage shrubs for four season interest; bold architectural perennials and ornamental grasses for drama, color, and movement; shade plants with variegation and unusual foliage color.
