Cayuga Nature Center: Wilderness Loop
Submitted by: Douglas Weeks
Category/Audience: Beginning hikers, Children-Families, Experienced hikers, Walking-hiking, Seniors
Best for: X-Country Skis, Snowshoes, Other: quiet reflection

Describe location/distance/terrain:
My favorite trail is the Wilderness loop located at the Cayuga Nature Center. While all of their trails are great and provide a welcome respite, this trail allows one to get the feel of a wilderness experience. The trail is a bit rough but manageable for most all sorts of walkers (this trail is not one of the wheelchair accessible trails at the center though.) I suggest bringing along a sketch book, camera, or something similar for some quiet reflection along the way.

Why do you think this walk or trail is special and why would others also enjoy it?
As noted above, this trail is unique among many of the local trails as it does truly give the walker the opportunity to get a wilderness sensation, without having to travel to the north country. Even though it is only about 6 miles north of ithaca, the remoteness felt along the trail takes the walker to a very different place.
