My
favorite trail is the eastern half of the Cayuga Trail, a footpath
built and maintained by the Cayuga Trails Club on Cornell Plantations
natural areas. The eastern half of the Cayuga Trail extends eastward
from Freese Road along the north side of Fall Creek, crosses Fall
Creek on NY Route 13 near 4-H Acres, and then continues westward
on the south side of Fall Creek to an unnamed road near NY Route
366 in Varna. The distance is 4.3 miles. One of the best qualities of this trail is the varied and sometimes challenging terrain. From Freese Road, the Cayuga Trail passes along the high banks area far above Fall Creek. The trail then goes steeply downhill to the banks of Fall Creek which it follows for half a mile. It then leaves Fall Creek and enters an interesting gorge, skirts an agricultural field, enters woods on high ground, and returns to the level of Fall Creek once again. After crossing over Fall Creek on the highway bridge, the trail enters and emerges from woods and follows an old railroad bed. It goes through the Monkey Run area (where did that name come from?) through beautiful woods to the unnamed dirt road in Varna. (The hiker can then walk along Route 366 and up Freese Road to complete a loop.) |

| Why do you think this walk or trail is special and why would others also enjoy it? | |
| The scenery, landscapes, and varied terrain make this section of the Cayuga Trail very special. It is beautiful in all seasons. From Freese Road, one can also head west 4.1 miles on the other half of the Cayuga Trail to reach its western terminus at Stewart Avenue. | |
