Cornell Plantations
Submitted by: Carol V. Kaske
Category/Audience: Children & Families, Most Scenic/Historic, Seniors
Best for: Walking/Hiking, X-country skis, Snow shoes + roller blades, bikes in the Arboretum

Describe location/distance/terrain:
Cornell Plantations, chiefly the Arboretum but also the Wildflower Garden, affords excellent trails for seniors. Each affords parking. The Arboretum has hills which are fun but can be daunting to some seniors. The Wildflower Garden is flat but the trails are unpaved and not shoveled. The smooth, occasionally shoveled, blacktop roads and paths in the Arboretum allow one to raise one's eyes to look at the scenery, and they rarely ice over except in patches. The trails consist of several loops, each about a mile long.

Why do you think this walk or trail is special and why would others also enjoy it?

Unlike the Inlet Trail in Cass Park, another good site for seniors, the Plantations has no restrooms except in the Gift Shop during the tourist season. The numerous benches allow anyone who gets a pain to sit down until one's companions come back and pick them up; meanwhile everyone can still maintain contact by eye, voice, and the gong at the summit.
