This
is a short trail, maybe a half mile, that runs along the former
railroad bed between the end of Freeville Depot Road and Union Street
in the Village of Freeville. |

This beautiful trail is perfect for seniors and families with children -- it covers a short distance over flat terrain and begins and ends on little village roads. I recently rediscovered this trail. I grew up in Freeville and remember when the last train came through the village in the early 1970s. My siblings and I used to walk along the unused railroad bed, hopping from railroad tie to railroad tie, singing songs to get the rhythm right. The tracks were pulled up and I didn't think much about the railroad bed until years later. As an adult, I was pleased when the village decided to clear and mow the railroad bed that went through the backside of the village and I occasionally cut through the railroad path as a way to get from one end of the village to the other. But it wasn't until this winter that I discovered the beauty of the path. I've incorporated walking the railroad path on my early morning walks and have marvelled at the wildlife I've seen or heard, including several species of woodpecker and deer. You walk through a young hardwood forest that opens up on the east side of the path into a large swampy area with quite a bit of water (the result of some very industrious beavers). To come upon that opening as the sun is rising is breathtaking -- there are always mallards and Canada geese on the water, swimming through the reflection of the early morning sky. This trail is perfect for seniors who are just getting back into walking, families with children, and people enjoy the surprise of a lovely early morning moment. |
