Finger Lakes National Forest/Hector Land Use Area
Submitted by: Joseph Fort
Category/Audience: Children/families, Most Scenic
Best for: X-country skis

Describe location/distance/terrain:
Finger Lakes National Forest (Hector Land Use Area). Directions to Trailhead (from Ithaca): take Rt. 96 north to Trumansburg, take a left onto Rt. 227, Across from water tower take a right onto Searsburg Road; take a left onto Potomac Road (just after Ballard Pond), proceed on Potomac Road to parking area on right across from Chicken Coop Road. Trail Directions: From parking area, go south on Potomac Rd. appx. 50 yards. Trail entrance is on right (Trail to Potomac Pond is across the road). Proceed west on trail to Foster Pond (which will be on your right, Interloken Trail will enter on your left just before pond). At western end of Foster Pond, take trail to the left (west). A nice long, easy downhill cruise to the intersection with the Backbone Horse Camp/No-Takto Trail. Take right and proceed north. The first section is the most difficult with a steep descent to the right and a sharp left at the bottom where a wooden bridge crosses a small stream, then a steep climb out of the ravine, once you get the top you’ll be rewarded with panoramic vistas looking west across Seneca Lake and the Ridgelines of Keuka and Canandaigua Lakes. Continue north until trail takes a right (uphill, east): (corner of Balldiamond and Wardner Corners Road on your left). Follow to top of hill to intersection of Interloken Trail. Take right on Interloken Trail continue until you encounter trail coming in from left. This will bring you back to the northside of Foster Poind. Continue up hill to the starting point of the parking area. Total length: appx. 4 to 5 miles.

Why do you think this walk or trail is special and why would others also enjoy it?
First quarter of this route is virtually all downhill and not too difficult for beginning x-country skiers. Scenic vistas overlooking Seneca Lake and beyond. A nice mix of pine and mixed forests, old orchards and fields. Uphill sections are not too strenuous. A great place to take kids, friends from out of town, or to cruise solo!
