Hammond
Hill State Forest. A 5 mile loop starting and ending on Hammond
Hill Road. This trail takes you through varied terrain (forest trails
and meadow trails) - newer forest trails as well as wider old roads
that were once well traveled routes through the forest. (See map
at: http://www.footprintpress.com/Snow_Trails/map-hammond_hill.htm) |

| Why do you think this walk or trail is special and why would others also enjoy it? | |
| This trail is special because it is easy enough for beginning hikers or skiers, but is also historically interesting. It takes one through an historical area that once was home to several farmsteads but is now state forest (since the 1930's.) It takes one through varied terrain (forest trails and meadow trails). It follows newer trails as well as old roads that were once well traveled through the forest. The hike is not challenging, nor is the ski version challenging, but follows gentle ups and downs and ends with a smooth descent through pines back to the parking lot on Hammond Hill Road. This is a popular route in the snow season for cross-country skiers, but there is much less traffic in the spring, summer and fall. Also, it is close to Ithaca so only a short drive (less time driving, more time hiking/skiing!) | |
