Taughannock Falls Gorge Trail
Submitted by: Kimberly Kenyon
Category/Audience: Beginning hikers, Children-Families, Experienced hikers, Most Scenic-Historic, Seniors
Best for: All forms: Walking-Hiking, X-country skis, Snowshoes

Describe location/distance/terrain:
Taughannock Falls Gorge Trail. The park is located outside of Ithaca. Take Route 89 north for about 8 miles. You can also get there from Trumansburg using Route 89. The park is also accessible from Route 96N/S from Jacksonville. From Jacksonville Road (across from the gas station) you drive south about 3 miles and take a right onto Park Road just after Gorge Road. The trail is ¾ mile long and is a flat walk that is wide enough to accommodate a wheelchair or baby stroller. If it is mucky you may want to be take turns wheeling though!

Why do you think this walk or trail is special and why would others also enjoy it?
Taughannock Falls Gorge Trail offers people of all walking abilities a chance to meander into another world. One far removed from IMing on your computer or reality TV. This trail allows you to glimpse the world as it was generations before. Starting at the small falls you can see fly fishers practicing their silent art. As you make your way through the tree covered trail it winds along the river. If you walk down to the waters edge you’ll see the rocks pockmarked and potholed by ice, wind and water. Each step takes you further into the majesty of the ice carved gorge. Look up to see the trees rooting themselves against the elements. Breathe in the wood, water, and trees. In the open areas along the river you may spot birds dipping into the wind riding the thermals. If you close your eyes near the large waterfall you may feel the spray on your face and be completely connected to the Earth. Taking that time to reflect in nature for your self is very important to me and I highly recommend it for others. So much so that I had my wedding reception at the park and shared this beautiful spot with my family and friends.
