TOMPKINS COUNTY
FARM CITY DAY
2004 Host: Fouts Farm
In 1937 Floyd Fouts came from
Iowa to the Finger Lakes region of New York and bought the Suggett family
farm in Groton. Nearly 70 years later a fourth generation of the Fouts
family is growing up on that same farm. Today, Floyd's son Bob farms with
his wife, Sharon, and his son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Laura. Paul
and Laura are happy to be raising their two children, Julia (age 6) and
Derrick (age 4), on the family farm.
Fouts
farm has grown from an original herd of 12 cows to 115 cows and 650 tillable
acres 25 years ago to 220 cows and 1100 tillable acres today. A new 80-cow
barn is underway to accommodate a herd of 250 cows. In addition to the
dairy operation, the Fouts family grows field crops including orchard
grass, alfalfa, corn, soybeans, oats and barley. They also have a farm
stand, open June-October, where they sell farm grown sweet corn and pumpkins
as well as a variety of local in-season produce. The farm's hay bale and
corn mazes have been an area attraction for several years and this fall's
corn maze promises as much fun as ever! The farm enterprises not only
support the Fouts, they also provide employment for 5 full time and 2
part time workers.
