Don't miss this unique opportunity to see first hand renewable energy and green building practices at work in our area. Green building involves designing, constructing or renovating homes, schools, workplaces and other structures for high performance, human health and environmental sustainability. This year's Open House features 25 homes and businesses in Tompkins, Tioga and Schuyler Counties. Homeowners and building managers will be on site to answer questions and describe their green building features - such as energy efficient appliances, passive solar design, photovoltaics, wind power, salvaged and non-toxic building materials, local lumber, strawbale construction and more.
We welcome you to visit participating sites between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sat., Oct. 6. Use the above link to the 2007 Guide to plan your route. (Guides are also available at Cooperative Extension.)
We also offer organized van tours guided by green building professionals. Fee is $10/person or $15/two from same household. Vans depart from Cooperative Extension at 12 noon, visit 4-5 homes, and return by 4:30 p.m. Advance registration is required for van tours. Space is limited. Please call 272-2292 to register.
Green building professionals will also lead a cycling tour and a motorcycle tour. For more information, contact Tania Schusler at 272.2292 x184 or email tms23@cornell.edu.
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County and the Ithaca Green Building Alliance are local organizers for this annual event held by the Northeastern Sustainable Energy Association in conjunction with the American Solar Energy Society’s National Solar Tour. Some funding was provided by a renewable energy seed grant from Cornell University. Assistance for non-Tompkins County tour sites provided by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schuyler and Tioga Counties.
