The 4-H Environmental Appreciation Days Program is coordinated by 4-H Youth Development of Tompkins County Cooperative Extension & Finger Lakes State Parks. Accepting Volunteer Instructor Applications until March 28, 2008. What Is 4-H Environmental Appreciation Days? For over 20 years, area 4th, 5th and 6th graders have enjoyed a unique outdoor environmental education program made possible by dedicated volunteer instructors who lead the students through hands-on nature and ecology lessons. Students travel to State parks, 4-H Acres and other sites around the County to participate in three 50-minute lessons in one day. Each year, more than 500 students participate. This year's program dates are: Friday, May 2; Monday, May 5; and Tuesday, May 6. In order to make 4-H Environmental Appreciation Days possible, over 70 volunteers are needed. You can be a volunteer instructor to teach a lesson by yourself or with a friend, on any topic that will help students become more environmentally aware: birds, trees, watersheds, compost, geology, or whatever it is that you are passionate about. If you would prefer to help with the logistics of moving students through the program smoothly, you can volunteer to be a site coordinator. The goal of 4-H Environmental Appreciation Days is to expand students' knowledge of the natural world and to develop in them a sense of stewardship. What Is 4-H? 4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning leadership, citizenship and life skills. 4-H offers youth supervised independence, a sense of belonging with a positive group, a spirit of generosity toward others and a wide variety of opportunities to master life challenges. 4-H reaches youth ages 5-19 through informal youth groups (4-H Clubs), programs in schools, after-school, through workshops, and special events open to the general public. 4-H is educational -- and fun!
