Matching Grants Program

These grants were awarded in the fall of 2003, and will be completed in the fall of 2004.

Danby Community Park

Before: Land that is designated for a new community park on Rt. 96B will have landscaping added to the entrance

After: The understory of the park was cleaned up, a new sign was placed at the entrance
and a flower garden planted around the sign

Groton

Before: A building adjacent to the community memorial park

After: A Groton youth designed and painted a mural depicting the Village of Groton to fulfill his Eagle Scout requirements

Freeville

Before: The historic water tower used to fill steam engines is now a village landmark

Women's Community Building, Ithaca

Before: The landscaping around the WCB was overgrown and in need of replacing. The shrubs near the entrance obscured the information sign and the planter adjacent to the sidewalk was filled with overgrown shrubs and weeds.

After: The overgrown yews and weeds were removed and replaced with shrubs and perennials that don't hide the sign and are more suitable for the small planters.

Clinton Street Tree Groves, Ithaca

Before: The plantings under the tree groves were sparse and needed more color

After: Spring bulbs, Oriental lilies and other perennials were added for more summer color

The Ithaca Commons

Before: The concrete bollards at each entrance to the Commons needed some color

After: Wooden planters were made by a local craftsman and filled with Wave petunias add a splash of color to the Commons entrance.

Cayuga Waterfront Trail, Ithaca

Before: The trail crossing at Rt. 89

After: A bulletin board at the trail head will provide information for trail users

Ithaca High School

Before: The high school entrance needed landscaping

After: Ornamental grasses and shrubs at the driveway entrance and next to the building.

Rt. 79/366 Median, Ithaca

Before: The traffic median was filled with gravel and could not support permanent plantings

After: The gravel was removed and replaced with soil, and groundcover roses were planted in the median.

Sciencenter, Ithaca

Before: The fence between the Sciencenter and Rt. 13 is covered with weeds and invasive vines

After: Ornamental grasses planted along both sides of the fence

Bryant Park Bump-Out, Ithaca

Before: The traffic-calming bump-out planted with grass

After: The grass was removed, and the bump-out was planted with shrubs, perennials and ornamental grasses.
Spring bulbs and annuals will be added for seasonal color.
