Open Day June 14, 2008
Sears Garden
309 East Court Street, Ithaca

In the early 1970's, after Ms. Sears had designed the lower garden, she innocently purchased two 'Electron' roses, which continue to bloom to this day. They led Ms. Sears to create the gardens you see today that include over 100 varieties of roses. In the lower garden, hybrid teas are grown in raised beds. In the long bed are floribundas, while white varieties of various species surround the small lawn.
In 1991 Ms. Sears purchased the house next door, and inspired by the New Orleans public rose garden, redesigned its backyard to feature a brick path, pond and surrounding standard roses as well as various shrubs, most of which were hybridized by Dr. Griffith Buck. Recently Ms. Sears has successfully and almost entirely replaced chemical fertilizers and insecticides with organic fertilizers and biological insect controls.
Directions: In Ithaca, 309 East Court Street is on the last block of East Court Street after Aurora Street. parking is available along the street. Entrance to garden is at the back of the driveway, next to the garage.
Proceeds from this garden will be shared with the Tompkins County Community Beautification Program.
