David Watkins Jr. Garden
201 Hillview Place, Ithaca
This city garden tucked away on South Hill features over 100 different hybrid daylilies and 60 plus varieties of hostas. The garden features an interesting mix of shrubs, evergreens, perennials and annuals. Reclaimed from an overgrown and rocky hillside dominated by yews, it has become an eclectic mixed garden featuring several beds, with shade and some sun. Hostas, a variety of ferns, astilbe and shade loving perennials mix with coleas, impatiens and potted plants to brighten the darker sections while the hybrid daylilies and sun loving perennials make up the balance of the garden. Created and maintained by the artist/photographer owner, one can be pleasantly surprised by the “happy accidents” that regularly occur.
Directions: From downtown Ithaca, take Rt. 96B south toward Ithaca College. about half a mile up the hill from downtown there is a traffic light at Hillview Place. Turn right onto Hillview Place, come down the hill and cross Turner Place. (If you are coming on Rt. 96B from the south, the traffic light at Hillview Place is just past the South Hill School parking lot entrance.) #201 is the last house on the left coming down Hillview Place before it dead ends at South Hill Terrace. Please park park on Hillview Place or on South Hill Terrace. The entrance to the garden is on the uphill side of the house.
Proceeds from this garden will be shared with the Tompkins County Community Beautification Program.
