Volunteers planted approximately 75 low-growing shrubs, including compact Forsythia, Spirea 'Goldmound' and 'Neon Flash', Barberry 'Crimson Pygmy' and creeping Juniper. Perennials at the point include Daylilies and Black-eyed Susans for summer color.

Ithaca Festival Parade

The Beautification Brigade marched in the Ithaca Festival Parade, pushing wheelbarrows planted with annuals, and giving out packets of flower seeds to the crowd lining the streets. It was fun to have our 15 minutes of fame!

Wooden Planters for the Ithaca Commons

Volunteers filling wooden planters for the Commons  Filling wooden planters

Businesses on the Ithaca Commons sponsored wooden planters that are placed near their stores, with a plaque on each one indicating the name of the sponsoring business. Beautification Brigade volunteers filled the planters with an exotic assortment of colorful annuals that were donated by The Plantsmen nursery in Groton. The wooden planters were made by Bill Baker, a craftsperson with the Handwork Cooperative in Ithaca.

Planters installed on the Commons

The planters are secured to the concrete walls on the Commons, where they provide a splash of color in front of the shrubs and trees.

Sprucing Up State Street

The Beautification Brigade tackled East and West State Street, the main entrance to downtown and the Ithaca Commons.

In the fall of 2004, the grass on this median was stripped by a group of volunteers from Cornell University, and a mass planting of perennials and bulbs was planted by the Brigade. Perennials include salvia, sedum, coreopsis, Russian sage and catmint. Daffodils and tulips will bloom next spring followed by the perennials. Annuals will be added to the planting next summer.

The Brigade also tackled the weedy tree planters on West State Street. Groundcovers will be added to these planters to help suppress weeds and add some interest. It's a tricky area to plant because people need to step into the planters when accessing their vehicles or feeding the parking meters.
