Evaluation
Criteria
- Model horses are judged
using the same criteria as real horses, with a few added features - taking
into account that a model is frozen in suspension. Much attention is paid
to detail and realism.
- Models must be original
finish only. Original finish is a mass produced model that has NOT been altered
in any way. Repairs are OK as long as the original structure has not been
changed. OF models will be judged on condition of model, age and rarity, breed
type and conformation.
- A model will not be
disqualified for a bad feature, but placed at the bottom of the class and
reasons given as to why it was placed there.
- Performance classes
- The exhibitor should
depict a major action of the class. The position of the model is analyzed
as to the appropriateness for the class. For example, a standing model
should not be shown in front of a jump. It would be considered a refusal.
It is best to depict the principal part/action of the Performance Class.
- Props/obstacles
add realism to the picture. They are required in many events, such as
trail, speed, jumper, working cow horse, etc. The props displayed with
your model should be correct for the class and be in the proper proportion.
- The more the model
appears to be doing the required activity, the better it will place. Dolls
are not required, but they may be used to enhance the overall picture.
- All performance
classes require tack. Here is the minimum that is required for each class,
plus suggestions for extras.
- Western Pleasure
– western saddle, saddle pad, and bridle required. Can add a
breastplate, or use a bosal/hackamore for a horse that is under 5
years old. NO martingales, draw reins, or cavessons allowed.
- English Pleasure
– English saddle, bridle with snaffle, pelham, or kimberwicke
bit. The bridle must have a cavesson and throatlatch. Can add a breastplate,
and/or a white “fleece” saddle pad. NO Martingales, draw
reins or boots allowed.
- Saddle Seat
– Cutback flat English saddle, full or Pelham bridle. Forward
English saddles, breastplates, and martingales prohibited.
- Hunter/Jumper–
Same tack as for English Pleasure, but you will probably want to add
a breastplate and a white fleece pad, and can add a standing martingale.
Running martingales are not allowed.
- Dressage –
Dressage saddle and bridle, white saddle pad. Riders over 4th Level
may use full bridles. NO martingales, draw reins or Pelham bridles.
- Harness - a
harness is required, but a cart is NOT required. Make sure the harness
is appropriate for the breed of the horse. Horse may or may not have
blinders.
- Please provide the
judge with a 3 x 5 card explaining what the horse is doing, what tack it wears,
and why exhibit is appropriate for class.
