WATER LOGGING…
Is a senior citizen based water quality monitoring project on the Greater Huntington-Northport Bay Complex, sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County Marine Program and funded by grants from The Fairleigh S. Dickinson Jr. Foundation, the Davenport Family Foundation, and The New York State Fund.
Background
Water Logging was initiated in the summer of 2003 as an educational outreach for the senior citizens of Huntington Town . In 2004 the outreach was expanded to be intergenerational with high school students.
Implementation
Working with CCE marine scientists on water quality monitoring equipment a network of enthusiastic volunteer senior citizens and high school interns, make weekly observations on 17-20 stations throughout the Greater Huntington-Northport Bay Complex from May to November. The program is named Water Logging as in keeping a ship’s log. The observations made are recorded on spreadsheets and made available on this website under the link Findings. Volunteers make up a nucleus of citizens who add to the stewardship of our Huntington-Northport Bay Complex.
