The Marine Program benefits all who work and play on the water in Suffolk County. Significantly, the Marine Program also provides a cleaner environment for fish, fowl, and plants that live in or around Suffolk County’s waters. We have educators housed in several locations throughout Suffolk County in an effort to reach as many residents as possible with information and educational programming. From the Helm - A few words from the "Captain" of the Marine Program. No Discharge Zone - Use pump out facilities to keep Huntington waters clean. Suffolk County Stormwater Management - A collaborative effort between Suffolk County and Cornell Cooperative Extension. Learn about the sources of pollutants, the environmental impacts of stormwater runoff, what you can do to help address the problem, and what Suffolk County is doing to help protect our waters. Sport Fishing Education Center - Located on Cedar Beach Marina in Babylon on Ocean Parkway. We are about 4 miles West of Robert Moses Causeway. This facility is host to educational programs of all types. Suffolk County Marine Environmental Learning Center - Located at Cedar Beach in Southold, NY. This facility comprises both educational and research programs. Western Suffolk County -The Marine Program brings unique educational and research opportunities to residents throughout western Suffolk County.
The Cornell Marine Program Youth Education Outreach Programs are now $150 for all outreach classes listed in the Educational Programs For Youth brochure with the exception of the Discovery Tank the cost of that class is $165. Marine Education Classes in Western Suffolk County - The group programs offered by the Cornell Education Staff are designed to interest students in grades K-12 throughout western Suffolk County in many diverse and exciting marine topics. They are offered as outreach programs held in your classroom or at your site. Sea Stars Marine Camp - a unique week-long summer experience for your child. Our marine instructors use hands-on activities to teach about Long Island’s vital marine environment. Your child will explore our local beach & salt marsh, and learn about the remarkable animals that live there. They will observe and handle live marine animals in our touch tanks, learn about marine science through our exciting planetarium shows & museum visits, and enjoy many beach activities, such as swimming, seining, beach games, and marine arts & crafts. Jr. Marine Biologist - Looking for a unique way to spend time with your preschooler? Join us for a fun-filled two hours as you and your child learn about the marine environment. This very special program includes hands-on time with live marine animals, beach activities, and a craft. 2009 Sea Explorers Marine Day Camp - Have your child join us for a fun filled week exploring the saltmarshes Great South Bay, and beaches of the south shore! Sea Explorers Marine Day Camp is a unique experience which will allow you child to discover the amazing marine ecosystems and animals Long Island has to offer. While learning about these creatures, they will also learn how to protect these fragile environments and be good stewards of the these precious resources. These 1 weeks sessions are filled with fun, hands-on marine activities, beach games, touch tank time, fishing, crabbing, beach time, seining, and marine related arts and crafts! Aquaculture Research & Development - provides an additional source of income for seafood harvesters on the east end. Also offers Community involvement through a new program called SPAT (Southold Project in Aquaculture Training). Evaluation of Summer Flounder Discard Mortality in the Bottom Trawl Fishery Fisheries Management - Learn about the fisheries sampling program and the different species of fish - along with regulations and quotas. Geographic Information Systems - Using technology to assist in resource planning and marine conservation. S.P.A.T. - The Southold Project in Aquaculture Training (SPAT) is a non-profit community based shellfish restoration effort. Habitat Restoration - CCE's Eelgrass Restoration and monitoring as well as wetlands restoration programs. Horseshoe Crab Research - A horseshoe crab volunteer monitoring network The Value of Natural Shorelines - A paper presenting objective, factual information regarding the inherent "value” of natural shorelines from a Public and ecological perspective. Water Logging - Is a water quality monitoring program with the goals of using field monitoring as an educational tool and an outreach experience.
