CCE strives to demonstrate the advantages of using GIS in resource planning and marine conservation. For example, a Community Mapping Program (CMP) is currently underway in Babylon. The CMP is a community-based partnership that empowers youth to use mapping and decision-making tools such as GIS to enhance their understanding of local environmental issues.
CCE is currently working with several school districts using Biodiversity as the theme of their CMP. Students are educated on the importance of biodiversity and how it is impacted by human activities. Their learning experience is enhanced by conducting inventories using GPS and GIS mapping, and the product will have benefits not only for the students, but for the general public and local land-use decision makers.
