Lion - (Leo)

The Lion can be found by using the Big Dipper. Follow a line from the two end stars of the Big Dipper and it will lead you right to it. One star that makes up The Lion is Regulus. Regulus means little king and is known as the royal star. It shines 160 times brighter than the Sun.

The Lion was believed to have been the first of the twelve labors of Hercules. It was a Nemean Lion that roamed the Peloponnesian villages killing whoever it came in contact with. Its skin was so hard that even swords and arrows could not penetrate through it. So Hercules had to strangle it. He then wore the Lion skin as armor. Zues, the father of Hercules, sent the spirit of The Lion into the sky to form the constellation in honor of the great battle.

The Lion is best seen in April at 9:00 p.m. It is visible between latitudes of 90 and -65°.
