What is the Long Term Care Insurance Education and Outreach Program?
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County has initiated a community outreach program that specifically addresses consumer concerns regarding long term care insurance. Cynthia Russell our full-time coordinator provides educational seminars and public presentations in the work place, libraries, civic associations and community-based organizations. . Topics include, planning for long-term care expenses, financing options, long-term care insurance, and the New York State Partnership for Long-Term Care. In addition, Cynthia offers follow-up sessions for participants and a helpline for further consultation and referrals. All information provided is solely for educational purposes. It is not intended as an endorsement of New York State of any specific insurance product or insurer.

More about LTCIEOP:
Long-term care refers to chronic or disabling conditions that require nursing care or constant supervision either institutionally or in the consumer’s home. Long-term care services that provide people options other than nursing home care include adult day care, respite care and hospice care. The decision to purchase long-term care insurance is very important and LTCIEOP assists the public make informed decisions regarding financial protection and policy choice.

To increase the public’s awareness of LTCIEOP, a link has been established with the Suffolk County Office for the Aging’s Health Insurance Information, Counseling and Assistance Program (H.I.I.C.A.P.). This program offers free, confidential and unbiased insurance information and counseling to Medicare recipients and their families. The LTCIEOP's coordinator provides training and technical assistance to H.I.I.C.A.P. staff and volunteers and is available on a regular basis to respond to questions and concerns. In addition, the coordinator will solicit feedback from H.I.I.C.A.P. and other counselors and distributes evaluation forms at each public presentation.

Enhancing LTCIEOP, a relationship with the New York State Partnership for Long-Term Care has been established. This unique and innovative program combines private long-term care insurance and Medicaid Extended Coverage to help consumers prepare financially for the possibility of future nursing home or home health care needs. This program allows New Yorkers to protect some or all of their assets while remaining eligible for Medicaid. The LTCIEOP coordinator disseminates information concerning this program to make consumers aware of participating insurers they can contact.

Through public contact, community-wide seminars, volunteer recruitment and training, Cornell Cooperative Extension Long-Term Care Insurance Education and Outreach Program insures that consumers receive timely and accurate information presented in an unbiased manner in order to make the best choices for long-term care insurance.
