A microwaveable heating pad is remarkably soothing for arthritis and other aches and pains. It is pliable and contours easily to fit shoulders, necks, and knees.

Rice is the magical ingredient in the bag. Rice absorbs enough water from the atmosphere that when heated in a microwave, it generates a steady moist heat.

Directions for Making

Materials Needed

  • A dish towel, hand towel or soft fabric, such as cotton flannel. (Approximate towel size is 15 inches by 24 inches).
  • 2 pound bag of uncooked rice (not "minute" rice).
  • 2 tablespoons of dried lavender, rosemary, whole spices (do not use ground form), or potpourri for fragrance if desired.

To Assemble

  1. If using a small towel, cut it in half, making 2 pieces each 15" x 12". (If you are using soft fabric, determine a finished heating pad size. Cut 2 pieces of fabric the length and width desired allowing 1/2 inch seam allowances.)

  2. For the towel, fold lengthwise to make a long rectangle, measuring 15" x 6".

  3. With the right sides together, pin the towel and sew it completely around the 3 open sides, leaving a 3-inch opening next to the folded edge. Use small machine stitches so none of the rice leaks out.

  4. Turn the towel right side out.

  5. Using a funnel, pour the contents of a 2-pound bag of raw white rice into the 3" opening. If desired, add dried herbs, spices, or potpourri.

  6. Tuck in the seam allowance of the opening and sew it closed.

How To Use

Heat in a microwave oven at full power for 3 to 4 minutes. Regulate the temperature of the pad by increasing or decreasing heating time.

CAUTION: Always test the temperature of the pad before placing next to the skin of a very young child or elderly person. The pad produces a lot of moist heat so a towel placed between the pad and the skin may be more comfortable. NEVER put this heating pad on a person who cannot feel heat.
