Legislation on the removal of trees from private property

In a recent letter from the Town of Oyster Bay, Richard Betz writes:
"Effective January 1, 2008, the Town of Oyster bay enacted new legislation that requires a permit for the removal of trees on private property. Trees with a caliper of eight (8) inches or more are subject to this requirement.

"Section 225 of the Town Code mandates that all residents or their contractors submit an application for a permit before any removals begin. After receipt of the application, an inspection will be arranged with the homeowner to ascertain the size, location and number of trees to be removed. The Town has the right to deny a tree's removal if it does not pose a hazard to the wellbeing of the homeowner or the property."
