3rd Annual Family
Auction & Program

CCE-Steuben’s 2008 annual dinner program covered a topic high on everyone’s wallet - the price of gas and potential alternatives. Keynote speaker Meghan Murphy said, “Individuals taking some risks are going to move us forward.”

She described driving to the program in a vehicle using straight vegetable oil (SVO) processed from waste cooking oil by the Ithaca Biodiesel Cooperative. Using straight vegetable oil as a fuel requires modifications to diesel vehicles, primarily a fuel pre-heating and temperature monitoring system. Since straight vegetable oil is more viscous and must be heated to improve flow and filtration, it can become problematic in sub-zero winter temperatures. Still, biodiesel produced from the same vegetable oil can be burned in any diesel vehicle without modification, either as an alternative or in a blend with petrodiesel.

Meghan said two percent of the cars on the road in the U.S. run on diesel. Using biodiesel, she said, reduces the carcinogens that children breathe in diesel buses. She also pointed to the benefit of biodiesel extending engine life due to increased lubricity.
