Eat Smart New York!Eat Smart New York!

Eat Smart New York (ESNY) is a nutrition education program designed to help Food Stamp families. Friendly “Community Center” workshops are available for families who want to stretch their food stamp dollars, try new   recipes, and create nutritious meal for their families.

Funding Source
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has provided a funding foundation for Seneca County Department of Human Services Temporary Assistance and Disabilities to collaborate with Cornell University's Cooperative Extension System to provide nutrition education for low income youth, seniors, and adults. Understanding the importance of individual and group dynamics, needs, and confidentiality, ESNY nutrition education programs are uniquely tailored by a pre-planning phase with an ESNY Extension Educator.

Workshops

Open to Public:

“Sister’s In Health” -

Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension has a walk-in informal “Sisters In Health-Community Workshop Center” located at 308 Main Street Shop Centre (3rd Floor of the Sessler Building), Waterloo. The center is open from 9 AM to 2PM every Thursday. Volunteers are always present at the community workshop center to provide fun recipes using foods available at your local food panty, farmer’s market and local grocery store.

If you get there by 10 AM you are welcome to join the ladies in making the “Recipe of the Day”.  We are a small friendly group of ladies who love to enjoy meeting you. Toddlers and infants are welcome, too. You do not have to help cook, but we do insist you enjoy a morning refreshment and friendly conversation. If you would like to join in with the group for lunch, please do!

The “Sister’s” not only enjoy making seasonal recipes but enjoy making seasonal crafts. Our special occasion crafts will not only help save your food stamp dollars but will spread love and friendship to those who are closest to your family.

This Thanksgiving the ladies of the “Sister’s In Health-Community Center” prepared a holiday meal that was appropriate for someone watching the amount of sugars they eat. The menu included Roast Turkey, Stuffed Cranberry Sauce, Whole Wheat Bread Dressing, and Pumpkin Roll. Low-fat and low-sugar products were substituted in the recipe. The CCE staff, volunteers, and UPS delivery person (who just happened by) enjoyed the festive holiday lunch. The “Sister’s” are not keeping these recipes a secret so stop in, the “Sister’s” will be happy to share the recipes with you.

This year the “Sister’s” are working on creating a recipe book with all the recipes that have been tested at the “Sister’s In Heath-Community Center”. Scrap-book craft techniques will be used to make the recipe book a special family keep-sake to give traditional recipes to a cherished friend or loved one as a gift.

Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension is able to invite all family members that receive food stamps for FREE to the “Sister’s Community Center. If you are not enrolled in the Seneca County food stamp program we ask that you donate $5.00 per family member ($2.00 per child; infants free) each time you join us for refreshments and lunch and to cover the cost of any program supplies.

For more information please contact Linda Lawrence at Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension (link to staff directory) or better yet just stop in and join the fun!
