Roots and Wisdom is offering an exciting hands-on garden education program for children (ages 6-11) Monday through Friday, 9:00am-11:45am from July 9 – August 3, 2012.Each week children will learn lifelong lessons in the garden while digging, harvesting, and having fun. May 2012

May 12th 10:00am—11:30am  Mother’s Day Garden Gifts; Plant a gift that Mom will love!  Children will plant a beautiful flower pot for mom on her special day and create a Mother’s Day card using seeds and stamps made with fruits and vegetables. Cost per class is $5.00 per person or $15.00 per family. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required, for these classes. registration form

May 14th 11:30 AM, @ Duanesburg Senior Meal Site, “Sodium Guidelines” 

May 18th 11:30 AM, @ JCC Senior Meal Site, “Sodium Guidelines” 

May 19th   9:00am-11:00am,   Grow Your Own RaspberriesCost $5.00 +$10.00 materials,   Come learn to grow your own raspberries!  We will discuss soil, garden location, harvesting, preserving, and year-round management of this perennial   bramble.  Participants will each take home plants for their own gardens. registration form

May 19th   12:00-2:00 pm Constructing a Wooden Herb Box   Cost $5.00 + $25.00 materials, Do you want to learn how to grow herbs in a simple wooden window box? Once harvested, these herbs can liven up culinary dishes without adding extra sodium. Participants will construct and plant their own boxes to take home. registration form

May 21st 11:15 AM, @ Ten Eyck Senior Meal Site, “Sodium Guidelines” 

May 23rd  through June 27th,  from 10:00 AM - 11:45 AM;   Little Diggers.   Discover the wonders of gardening and nature with your preschooler (ages 3-5) through a series of six hands-on educational programs.  Each week we will participate in themed classes that introduce children to gardening and nature.  Garden exploration, nature walks, crafts, snack and stories will enrich your child’s understanding and appreciation for our natural world.  Class size is limited.  Please register with payment by May 16th, 2012,  Cost is $60.00. registration form

June 2012

June 2nd 9:00am-11:00am,All About Herbs   Cost $5.00 + $10.00 materials, Are you interested in the culture of herbs and herb gardening? In this class we will learn how to grow, maintain, and preserve herbs for tea and culinary use.  Participants will take home plants and recipes.registration form

June 9th   9:30am-10:30am,   Growing Roses and Rose Garden Tour   Cost $5.00,   Join one of our Master Gardeners, an avid rose enthusiast, on a beautiful tour of the Central Park Rose Garden. We will learn about various rose types and their habits; get tips on selecting the perfect plant for your property and learn how to plant and maintain your roses. registration form

June 9th   10:00am—11:30am,  A Morning in the Garden Join us as we meander through the garden looking for early season veggies to harvest.  Next we will plant some herbs (children will take one home) and work in our compost site.  Children will learn about vermicomposting by feeding our resident red worms; bring some banana peels. Cost per class is $5.00 per person or $15.00 per family. Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required, for these classes. registration form

June 9th 11:00am12:30pm,   Construct a Hypertufa Planting Trough  Cost $5.00 + $25.00 materials, Join us as we create an interesting, lightweight   hypertufa planting container. These stone-like troughs are perfect for displaying tiny rock gardens and alpine plants. Each participant will take home their own unique planting container. registration form

July 14th 10:00am—11:30am,   Beautiful Butterflies!   Families will learn about butterflies and how to choose plants that will attract them.  Tour our butterfly garden in the park and have the opportunity to create your own butterfly container plant to take home.  Cost per class is $5.00 per person or $15.00 per family.
