Eating Right: Nutrition, Health, and Food Safety

Prevention oriented and research-based, this priority program issue has three general goals to help Orange County residents manage food decisions for health:

People will engage in lifestyle changes that promote health
Every child and adult will have access to a safe and adequate food supply
Communities will manage their resources to promote nutrition and health of their citizens.

Information on the following topics is available: specific nutrient information, food storage, food safety, food preparation skills, maternal and infant health and well-being.

Expanded Food & Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP)

Two full time Nutrition Teaching Assistants work with families throughout the county on a one-to-one basis or in a group. EFNEP is flexible and responsive to the needs of the learners, building on the strengths of the families.

All areas of nutrition, food shopping techniques and food preparation can be a part of EFNEP. Youth from program families are also a part of EFNEP and are worked within a community group setting, in schools or in local youth agencies.

Eat Smart New York and SmartBites Newsletter

Eat Smart New York's main goals are to help participants make their food dollar last longer, encourage the consumption of more fruits and vegetables, recognize parents as role models for children’s dietary habits and safe food handling. Eat Smart New York attains these goals through a hands on, interactive series of workshops. Our classes include food preparation, recipe sampling, crafts and games. These programs are free to Food Stamp recipients and applicants. A program assistant is assigned to a specific area of the county. For more information please call us at (845) 344-1234

Every month Eat Smart New York participants receive Smart Bites, an informative newsletter full of dollar-stretching, nutrition-smart and food safety wise articles - plus great recipes and a calendar of upcoming Eat Smart New York events!   Recent Smart Bites issues have been provided for you here in PDF form (you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to open them - this is a free download from Adobe.com).
