Well Water Testing
Private water supplies, like wells, are not regulated and it is the responsibility of the owner to ensure quality. Many contaminants, like nitrates, that could pose health risks for infants and other at-risk groups are odorless and colorless.
Annual testing is the first step to ensure a safe drinking water supply.
2008 Well Water Testing Program for Ontario County Residents:
Ontario County residents can test their well water for a final cost of $25.00 through a program administrated by Cornell Cooperative Extension and funded through a grant from the Ontario County Water Resources Council. To receive more information about the details of the program and to sign up to participate, contact Cornell Coopertive Extension of Ontario County at 585-394-3977 x 427 or by email nea8@cornell.edu
Well owners can have their water tested for basic potability standards-coliform
bacteria and nitrates by a State Department of Health certified lab. See list.
