Communitree Stewards Current Volunteer

CommuniTree Stewards:
Information for Current Volunteers

Training for new stewards will begin in early April. Returning stewards are welcome, but not required, to attend any of the training sessions. New stewards give 15 hours of service in exchange for training. Returning stewards give 10 hours of service.

Watering trees s always a high priority during the growing season. Consider adopting a site for weekly watering. High priority this year:
Onondaga Park
Onondaga Lake Park
National Grid Arboretum on Water St.
Burnet Park
Faldo Park and the Myrtle Ave. cemetry on Tipperary Hill

What's with the Red Spire Callery Pear?

CommuniTree.jpgRedspire Callery Pear was the most planted bare-root street tree in 2006! It is a fast growing tree with a narrow crown, enabling it to be used under utility wires.

In the spring before the new leaves unfold, this tree puts on a lovely display of white flowers.

The pea-sized reddish fruits can persist on the tree for several months and add a touch of color to our winter landscape.

Disadvantages: Branch attachments can be weak, subject to sllitting and ice damage. Callery Pears are planted extensively, some say overused. Think about increasing urban forest diversity by using more species.
