Urban and Community Forestry

logo.jpgacorn.jpg

Cooperative Extension works to improve the quality and health of our urban forest by

  • Assisting local community groups to improve the tree cover in their own neighborhoods

  • Advising homeowners and municipal staff of tree care issues

  • Assisting municipalities to develop proactive methods to manage and maintain their tree resources

And by
  • Bringing together county residents to plant and care for trees on public spaces

Onondaga County is rich in a diversity of tree species and habitats. Our urban trees face challenges from construction, road salt and more. Despite these challenges we have an urban forest that is extensive and beautiful. The following links provide information for citizens on topics ranging from common tree pests to our volunteer CommuniTree Stewards program. Highlights
Bare Root Tree Planting is the time the Urban Forestry Program's efforts get to shine.
November means bare-root tree planting. The Community Tree Buying Program, the CommuniTree Stewards, the Onondaga Earth Corps and many, many citizen groups and individuals work together, regardless of the weather, to plant trees. This year, 432 trees were planted throughout Onondaga County. 200 of them were planted by volunteers, from 8 years old to 80 years young. Students, retirees, neighbors and friends dug holes and planted trees to grow shade and beauty in their communities.
