Graze NY
Technical Assistance for Managed Intensive Grazing
The Graze NY Program is collaboration between USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service, Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative, Onondaga County Soil and Water Conservation District and CCE Onondaga County. Funding has been provided through Congressman James Walsh. The program provides information about managed intensive grazing (MIG) where farmers rotate grazing animals through a series of small paddocks when grass reaches 6” to 8” in height with the animal grazing the grass to 2” in height before moving to the next paddock. Pasture walks, pasture meetings, and a newsletter are used as a means to support farmers using a pasture-based system. Cornell Cooperative Extension can provide technical assistance in managing a grazing system. The Onondaga County Soil and Water Conservation District can provide technical assistance in designing a pasture system and securing contractors to build a system. Contact Jean Burr at 315/677-3851 for more information.
