Roller-Crimper Cover Crop Project

Cover Crop.jpg
A new initiative is a cover crop demonstration project located on 6 farms and 52 acres.

In 2007 CCE staff visited the Rodale Institute in Kutztown, PA. At the visit staff learned about the use of rye, Austrian peas, and hairy vetch as a means to create natural mulch that would reduce tillage and decrease herbicide application by acting as a natural mulch. In 2008 a 15’ roller-crimper was purchased to roll down the cover crop after flowering. CCE staff secured grant funding through the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service for additional funding for this project. To learn more about this project view the following powerpoint presentations.
