4-H Government Intern Program for High School Students


County Government touches most of our lives by providing services that we use every day. Schools focus on teaching students about state and federal government, yet local government is closest to all of us. An understanding of local government allows students to become engaged citizens with a better understanding of the issues and concerns that arise in their communities.

This program is an opportunity available to high school juniors and seniors attending schools in Oneida County. Students that are selected for the program should have an interest in government, be self-motivated, and have the ability to meet the required time commitment. Interns must also be able to carry the full school load in addition to the program.


Students are matched with local government officials to discover first-hand how government works. Guest speakers, seminars, legislative meetings, committee meetings, public hearings, group projects, and possible field trips during either the fall or spring semester of the school year provide insight into the legislative process. Students successfully completing the government intern program receive a certificate of completion and may get academic credit as part of their “Participation in Government” course.

Student Requirements

  • Must be a junior or senior in high school.
  • Must have permission from their school to participate.
  • Must have parental permission to participate.
  • Must attend the required (5) sessions.
  • Must complete journal entries, a legislator interview,  a press release, and a resolution.
  • Must attend (3) legislative meetings, (1) committee/caucus meeting, and  participate in the mock board meeting.
  • Must arrange for their own transportation to all sessions / meetings.
