The 4-H Dog Project is a fun and exciting way to learn about dogs. Youth and their dogs will have the opportunity to learn showmanship, handling, and obedience skills.
Oneida County offers a dog handling course to youth ages 9 to 19 years who are enrolled in 4-H. The classes are usually held in the spring and meet once per week for approximately eight weeks.
The classes teach the youth how to train their dog at home. Dogs are brought to the classes but the majority of the training is expected to take place at home. The youth will learn how to teach their dog to sit, heal, come, halt, stand, stay, and down. The dog is trained using positive reinforcement. Having fun with the dog is the most important part of this event.
Upon completion of this course youth may participate in the Oneida County 4-H Dog Show usually held at the Boonville Fair.
