AUGUST 2004

Dear 4-H Club Leaders and 4-H Families:

Enclosed is the 2004 Award and Recognition Packet. Look through this packet carefully, revisions have been made. However, a consistent format is maintained so that more 4-H’ers are encouraged to complete applications.

The deadline for submitting ALL award applications is FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17, 2004 at 4:30 p.m. Applications WILL NOT be accepted after the deadline date.

Record keeping should be an ongoing process thus most of the task is already completed. Please resist the urge to set this packet aside. Tackle the job as soon as this packet arrives!

This mailing is being sent one per family. It includes two award application forms and two project information records. If more forms are needed they may be obtained from the 4-H office. Please call to have them mailed or stop in to pick up your extra copies. Included in this mailing are the following:

- Lewis County 4-H Guide to Awards & Recognition 2004 (blue)

- Lewis County Award Check List (white)

- Project Award Application (yellow)

- Award Application for Kohler & Sr. Achievement Horse Awards (lime green)

- Award Trip Application (lavender)

- I Dare Your Award Application (tan)

- Generic Project Record (pink)

There are record sheets available for the majority of 4-H projects and these are in stock at the 4-H office. In a project area where a record is not available (i.e. Cavy), we suggest using the generic form (sample enclosed) or create your own! Be sure it tells your project story. Please don’t hesitate to call the 4-H office for assistance if questions arise while completing the applications.

Watch for news about the 2004 Lewis County 4-H Recognition Event to be held on October 2nd at the Oswegatchie Educational Center.

In the 4-H Spirit,

Lewis County 4-H Family Guide to

2003– 2004 Project Year

The 2004 Achievement Event, traditionally held in the fall is scheduled for October 2, 2004. It is at this event that nationally and locally sponsored medals; trophies and awards (trips, $) are given out.

The following forms must be completed and are used as the basis for selection.

- Lewis County Award Check List (white)

- Project Award Application (yellow)

- County Honor Award Trip Form (lavender)

- The I Dare You Award Form (tan)

- Application for the Kohler & Bush Memorial Horse Awards (lime green)

These forms can be completed by any regularly enrolled 4-H member in Lewis County and must be submitted to the 4-H Office by FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 17th AT 4:30 P.M. A 4-H’er may receive a project medal more than once. Cloverbuds are not eligible for medals.

Applications WILL NOT be accepted after the deadline!

You may ask, “Why do I have to fill out records & forms?”

Benefits of completing 4-H reports include:

1. Valuable experience in completing reports which aids in completing college or job applications.

2. Helps 4-H members assess the value of 4-H experiences in their own development.

3. Provides opportunity to practice writing skills.

4. Helps develop skills in organization, self-analysis, correlating individual activities into the whole 4-H program.

5. Many awards are available including pins, savings bonds, scholarships and expense paid trips.

“How are the awards selected?”

In making award selections the committee takes many things into consideration. Overall, they are looking for 4-H’ers who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their project areas. In polling past record reviewers here is what they’ve looked for:

1. How in-depth did the 4-H’er pursue the project?

2. Did the 4-H’er give a presentation either at the club or county level?

3. Does the 4-H’er extend itself beyond the club? (e.g. jr. superintendent at fair, room host at demo’s, community service, jr. project leader)

4. Is there participation in countywide events or activities?

5. Is the report form completed by the 4-H’er? Is it neat, grammatically correct and well prepared with the developmental stage of the youngster in mind?

COUNTY AWARD APPLICATION HELP SHEET
