Association

  • On May 26, Cornell Cooperative Extension offices will be closed in observance of Memorial Day.

Agriculture and Natural Resources

  • Local Foods IV: Challenges and opportunities in the North Country, will be presented on three days:
    • Thursday, May 1 dinner event at Hohmeyers Lodge on Lake Clear in Lake Clear, NY(call 513-783-7403 for more info)

  • The annual Master Gardener Plant Sale will be held May 17. Come early for a great selection of vegetable plants, annuals, herbs, perennials, and houseplants.
  • The Seaway Wine and Viticulture Association will meet on May 19.
  • Horticulturalist Sue Gwise will talk about container gardening on Senior Citizen Day at JCC on May 22.

4-H Camp Wabasso

The summer youth camping season is gearing up.

  • We're now hiring temporary summer staff. See our position openings in the Announcements section.

4-H Camp Wabasso Cleanup Day will be held May 3. Come on up to camp and help get it ready for the summer season!

4-H Camp Wabasso Open House will be held on May 7 and May 10. Bring the whole family out to camp!

The Museum of the Earth comes to 4-H Camp Wabasso on May 17!

4-H Youth Development

  • 4-H Teen Council, which meets monthly, lets teens interact and have fun while planning and performing community service projects and learning skills; May 1.
  • 4-H Friday!, a monthly event for kids, will be held May 30.
  • Calling all 4-H kids! 4-H Dog Obedience Classes will be held throughout the months of May and June.
 

Fort Drum Programs

  • Employment Readiness works with Fort Drum families, teaching skills that will help participants enter the job market. See calendar for topics, dates, and times.
  • Visit Watertown's Salmon Run Mall on May 15 and 17 for the NorthStar Employment Fair.
  • We provide stress and anger management workshops for soldiers and their families. Check the calendar for dates and times.

  • A Community Activities Conference will tell you what's happening on and around Fort Drum. May 12.
  • A Community Information Forum will talk about opportunities and benefits of volunteering. May 22.
  • Relocation Readiness will hold a newcomer spoouses orientation and family medical in-processing on May 12.
  • Our Family Advocacy program will present a Terrific Toddler workshop for parents on May 6, 13, 20, and 27.
  • Our Army Volunteer program will hold the Volunteer of the Month ceremony on May 15.
  • An Army Forces Kick-off will be held in LeRay Heights on May 16..

Energy and Finance Education

  • The North Country Sustainable Energy Fair will be held in Canton on April 26 & 27.

Nutrition and Health

  • Our monthly eating disorder network video conference is for families of children with eating disorders. The next is scheduled for May 20.
  • CHANCE nutrition classes start May 1. This eight-week series of workshops offers free, fun, interactive nutrition information with a parenting twist. If you would like to attend the next scheduled classes, or set up classes for your group, please call our nutrition educators at (315) 788-8450.

Parenting

  • Young parents and parents-to-be learn valuable life lessons in our Parent To Parent program. In addition to individual home visits by our educators, the PTP group meets monthly. This month's gathering is a Fun Day at the Zoo, on May 24.
  • Parent To Parent Volunteers Needed
  • A six-hour program for parents undergoing separation or divorce will be held on June 5 & 12. More information is forthcoming.
  • A Watertown parent meeting will be held May 28.This group meets once a month.
  • A workshop titled Raising Responsible Children (part 2) will be held May 14.
  • Tips for parents will be presented to help kids Get Ready for Kindergarten. Held in several locations in May.

Community Programs

  • Bring the kids and have Lunch with Your Favorite Super Heroes in Copenhagen on May 17.
  • Youth and adults are invited to the ACT Conference held in Albany May 17.

Other Educational Programs:

  • Family Development Credentialling, an intensive course for professionals, is currently being held. Please call educator Carol West for information regarding this class.
  • Youth Development Basics Workshop is AYD training for adults who work with youth - May 28.
  • The AARP Defensive Driving Course will once again be held at our offices starting in April. Please call 788-8450 for more information.
    • May 14 and 15 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. This class is filled.
    • June 17 and 18 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. (As of April 28 there are still a few spots left for the June session.)
