"CORTLAND COUNTY 4-H'ERS "

As they Excelled at the 2006 Hippology Contest!

This year's contest was held at the Whitney Point High School in Broome County on Saturday, March 4th. A total of 17 teams within the 9 county district competed. Cortland County Cooperative Extension, parents, volunteers and coaches would like to share the accomplishment s of our 4-Hers with you.

The process of the contest is for the youth to identify many types of tack and equipment used with horses. To identify and determine the best feeds and nutritional rations a horse should eat depending on the conditions and stresses. They also had to identify horse breeds, countries of origin, answer a variety of questions regarding the horse industry, along with judging a group of horses from a video based on their best and worst conformation qualities. The senior team needs to solve a team problem, and represent their team by answering it in a very committed and convincing way to an official judge.

4-Her's from Locke, Groton, McGraw, Cincinnatus, N.Pitcher, Georgetown, Homer, Truxton, Marathon and Cortland have been meeting weekly with dedicated coaches and parent volunteers for the past 9-weeks preparing for this event in Cortland County. The groups did an awesome job and the outcome was so exciting. Congratulations to our 4-H'ers! (This group of 4-H'ers will be competing again on March 18th for the Regional Quiz Bowl contest that will be held at the Chenango Forks School).
