Northern New York Dairy Institute Presents:
Dairy Herd Health

Come learn about dairy herd health management from some of the best veterinarians, technicians, and academics in the dairy industry. This seven-topic course consists of classroom and hands-on, on-farm expereinces. Participants can choose to earn a proficiency certificate or both the certificate and college credits. The classes are as follows:
Class 1: January 12th in Clinton County, 13th in Franklin County – Dr. Tom Overton
- Management of the close-up dry cow. Preventing fresh cow metabolic disease.
Class 2: January 19th in Clinton County, 20th in Franklin County
- Management of the fresh/transition cow. Physical exams, diagnosis and treatment of disease. Benchmarks and SOP’s.
- Potential for on-farm visit and hands-on physical exams
Class 3: January 26th in Clinton County, 27th in Franklin County
- Calf and heifer health management – how to recognize and treat calf disease. Fluid therapy, physical exams.
- Potential on farm visit with necropsy
Class 4: February 2nd in Clinton, 3rd in Franklin – Dr. Garry Bennett
- Milk quality and mastitis – Culturing and pathogens, sample collection, treatment and milking procedures. Mammary gland physiology.
- Mastitic mammary gland dissection
Class 5: February 9th in Clinton, 10th in Franklin
- Infectious disease and biosecurity – Cover all animal groups and the recommended/suggested vaccines. Immunology, why we vaccinate and vaccination SOP’s. Why vaccines fail?
Class 6: February 16th in Clinton, 17th in Franklin
- Lameness management – Cow comfort, stocking density and welfare as they relate to production and lameness. Benchmarks to detect if lameness is an issue in your herd.
Class 7: Febraury 23rd in Clinton, 24th in Franklin
- Reproductive management – How metritis, BCS loss, and lameness effect reproductive performance. Dairy Comp 305 for reproductive performance record keeping.
- Students taking it for credit will complete a one hour written final exam at the close of the last class.
Cost is $75 for a proficiency certificate or $150 for college credit. Participants must attend all six sessions to receive a certificate or college credits. College credits are offered through both Morrisville State College and Alfred State.
