BITS AND BOOTS

Bits and Boots met on October 11 to discuss our community service fundraise that will be November 14. We also had a club Halloween party and decorated pumpkins. Submitted by Caitlin Kozak.

CHATTERING CHIPMUNKS

SEPTEMBER
We began our new 4H year in September. Our meeting moved to Thursdays from 1-3pm. We welcomed a new co-leader Holly Warren and her daughter Emi Warren (K), along with Matthew Caito (7th) and Ben (4th) Caito and Anthony Yourdon (K), who was with us last year unofficially as a preschooler.

We began our year long study of Forestry. At our first meeting, the Cloverbuds learned about leaves and how to identify the types. Holly brought in a wonderful collection of leaves, bark and tree trunks. The JRs (3-8th) learned the parts of the leaf and tried their hand at measuring the heights of trees using a variety of proportionally measurement techniques. They learned that the use of a clinometer provided greater accuracy in the height measurement.

On 17 September, we traveled to Paul Smiths for a forestry field trip. Part of the group met early for a picnic and a tree identification walk. After a general introduction to the Interpretive Center, the Paul Smiths naturalists split the group into three sections for specialized lessons. PK-Grade 1 learned about the forest habitat and what animals reside here. They walked though the forest looking for evidences of various animals. The 2nd-3rd graders had a hands-on lesson on tree identification as they walked the forest trails. The 4th-8th graders participated in a glacial geology lessons and learned how the soils left behind from the glaciers affect the types of forests that are in the Adirondacks today. They also were taught to use dichotomous keys to identify various trees on the trails in the forest. We all learned some quick ways to remember trees- such as “MAD Horse”—the way to remember which native Adirondack trees have leaves with opposite stems (Maple, Ash, Dogwood, and Horse Chestnut)—and “Never shake hands with a spruce!” (The prickly conifer!)

OCTOBER
Oct 1
It was an optional meeting that most members attended, along with a member of another club and 2 potential new members. We participated in the National 4H Exploring Biofuel Technology Experiments. Everyone monitored bottles of yeast, water, and sugar to determine if the balloon topping the bottle would inflate, indicating the presence of carbon dioxide and therefore the breakdown of the sugar into CO2 and Ethanol. Members worked in groups to see what other “biological” substances could be broken down to produce ethanol.

Oct 8
We met at co-leader Holly Warrens house to collect leaves for our forestry project. The JRs worked on some of their project chapters and practiced using homemade clinometers to measure heights. We talked about the JR Forestry project options and a new service project opportunity.

Oct 15
This was a special field trip for members 4th grade and above-at the request of the artesian. The JRs traveled to Wayne Ignatuk's Swallowtail Studio in Jay NY to see handcrafted furniture. He showed members how he does his work and the tools he uses. He invited them to reassemble an alter he is crafting to understand the mortise and tenon joinery. It was a great team work opportunity. His hidden compartments in furniture were a hit as was the house he crafted for Mr. Snee. Hollowed out of a log is a two-story house for a 4-inch tall Adirondack man named Mr. Snee, complete with electric lighting, hand carved railings, custom stairs,  and handcrafted furniture. The members were impressed with Mr. Ignatuk’s work as well as his soccer playing Border collie and his wife’s Halflinger horses.

Oct 22
The whole group met at Saranac Hollow Woodworking and Adirondack Hardwoods to see Hal Moore's shop, the wood he works with and the tools he uses. He then explained how to sand wood and supervised the group sanding wood for their leaf presses. He taught the younger members how to use a drill and everyone drilled the holes for the bolts. He gave a demonstration on how to stain wood. Cheese order forms were passed out.

CREATIVE CRITTERS

The Creative Critters held their monthly meeting on October 10, 2009.

Members present: Alexander Trombley, Hannah Duprey, Allie Gifford, Jacob Balko, and Samantha Balko.

Each member gave a brief presentation about a famous artist they researched.  These were very creative and informative.

We discussed texture in art and looked at a few examples.  We completed "Pass the Sculpture Please" from our Arts and Crafts workbook.  This required each member to begin creating a sculputre and after so many minutes it was to be passed to the person to their right.  This continued until their original sculpture was returned to them.  Once this project was completed, each member was given the opportunity to create another sculpture of their own that didn't have to be passed around. The sculptures were all very creative and interesting.

Renewal paperwork was handed out as well as cheese sale paperwork.

A sign up sheet for our upcoming Light Up A Life community service with Hospice was passed around.  Each member had to sign up for 2 of the 4 dates listed.

A snack sign up sheet was also passed around so we know ahead of time whose turn it is for snack.

Achievement day was discussed and we reviewed our record book keeping.  A meeting was scheduled for the following week to complete our record books and have any questions answered prior to their due dates.

Next meeting is scheduled for November 13, 2009 at 6pm

FARM ALLS

SEPTEMBER
The Farm-Alls met in September and discussed the 2010 year.  Our new leaders, Kena Grub and Morgan Wright are busy planning some fun, educational events for us.

Discussion regarding our club officers for 2010 was held.  Elections for the positions will take place in October.  Rachael and Kathy Scarborough volunteered to be the "organizers" for our club's dairy bar session during the 2010 fair.  Stephanie and Jesse Moulton are going to be our public demonstration organizers.  Kelsey Ormsby and her mom, Patty are going to organize a community service project for our club involving toys for children at the holiday time.  As the planning progresses, we will keep you updated!

Laurie and Evan Cross provided an awesome apple crisp for snack for the meeting.  The recipe was reviewed with all members and will be offered as a 2010 project for the Farm-Alls.

The 4-H Fun Show was great!  As always, thanks to Clinton and Franklin County, and the great volunteers.  Many of our 4-H families came to cheer members on who were working or showing horses. Tot Wright rode her horse, 3-D One Ten, to the High Point Grand Champion Senior Rider -Congratulations Tot! Rachael Scarborough helped to keep things running smoothly by working the gates among other duties.

During our meeting some interesting things were shared:
 Stephanie Moulton (Saranac) and Karlea Provost (Ausable) are both pictured in their district-wide school calendars;
Rachael Scarborough is doing a presentation on endangered species with her Girl Scout Troop (way to practice for public presentations!)
Kelsey Ormsby and her mom had a friend who was doing some remodeling to an old home. When the floor boards were lifted, four baby kittens were found! Kelsey and her mom have been recruited to participate in the feeding of the kittens.  They have been mixing formula and feeding the kittens!

OCTOBER
The Farm-Alls are glad to report that the fall trail riding has been awesome. Our horses are fat and sassy and ready for winter. As in the past, we are busy planning winter rides and will ride as long as the surfaces hold up safely.

On October 18th, the Farm-Alls had a Halloween party. Members came and rode in costumes, which was great fun. Lots of yummy snacks and prizes were provided by our 4H families. Rachael Scarborough and her mom brought the Wright's a dozen small fresh brown eggs that were laid by Rachael's 4H project hens. Rachael has four happy hens who lay four eggs every day. Rachael raised the hens from chicks - great job Rachael!

Our club awards were distributed as follows:
Achievement and Leadership - Marci Giambruno
Citizenship, Achievement, and Leadership - Taylor Wright
Most Improved - Rachael Scarborough and Stephanie Moulton
Star/Achievement News Reporter - Evan Cross
Star/Achievement Secretary - Ashlea Provost
Spirit Award - Karlea Provost
The Music Maker Award - Joy Grub
The International Horse Award - Julie Griffin
The Club Presidential Award - Kaylee Couture
The Club Champion Timed Events Award - Brianna Tedford
Activities Award - Kelsey Ormsby

Club Hears Award - Hope Wright
Excellence in Gymkhana - Ashley Laduke
Youngest to Show A Horse At Fair - Emily Laduke

In 2009, Alyssa Couture completed her 4H Equine Science Program as did  Marci Giambruno and Taylor Wright. These members have been key to the Farm-Alls Horse Club program.  Thankfully, they have agreed to stay involved on some level.

At the meeting, Dave Justus from Morrisonville was invited to speak to our club about the community service he provides to area families.  The Farm-Alls are going to assist him with this community service project.   We will be collecting non-perishable foods and new or "like new" toys to be distributed during the holiday season.  Not only does he provide this service during the holiday season, he also helps year-round for families who experience fires in their home or who are just in need. Kelsey Ormsby, and her mom, Patty Todd, have agreed to chair this project. If anyone is interested in helping, please contact them at 561-9280.

The Farm-Alls have started their cheese sales. Thanks to Amy and Julie Griffin who agreed to be our organizers of this.

Our club would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a safe, healthy, and happy Thanksgiving!

GARDEN SPROUTS

Our 4-H group met on Oct 3rd. We learned how to plant daffodil bulbs. They were taught what a dibber was and how to use it. We went into the garden for hands on. They brought some bulbs home to plant in their own gardens. We learned about seeds in the garden. We collected seeds to store for next year. We learned about pumpkins. We painted polka dot baby boo pumpkins. We cut a pumpkin open and learned how to save seeds. We quickly talked about heirloom seeds.

By Isabelle Wray, Club Reporter
SEPTEMBER
We are a new horse 4-H club.  Our name is the Ready Riders and our members are: Elizabeth Wray, Johnna McDougal, Abigail D’Antonio, Alex Rock, Isabelle Wray and Rebekah Hilpl. Elizabeth is our president, Johnna is our vice president, Abigail is our secretary, Isabelle is our reporter, Rebekah is our treasurer, and Alex is our photographer.       We have had three meetings so far, and we meet regularly every other Thursday. In these three meetings we have elected officers, voted on a name, watched the helmet safety video, and discussed community service opportunities.  On our September 10th meeting we watched the helmet video. On our September 24th meeting Jen Miller volunteered her time to give us valuable riding instruction as a group and as individuals. On our October 8th meeting Chad O’Neill, who received professional training as a groom at Toronto’s Horse Palace, came to give us a grooming lesson.

OCTOBER
Friday October 16, 2009
Katie Longino, a former Clinton County horse 4-Her who has attended several Clinton Anderson clinics came and gave us a clinic on ground work. She used the round pen and Johnna's horse, Ruby.

 Thursday October 22, 2009
We welcomed a new member, Grace Longino, and we watched part of Safety on the Trail, a DVD with Tracy Westfall. After the DVD, we went out and did some trail riding. Carrie had set up a little bridge and a tarp for us to practice riding over.

Wednesday evening October 28, 2009
Our club took a field trip to Shelly and Emily Wing's horse farm in Essex.  Mrs. Wing taught us relaxation techniques to use on our horses.

Thursday November 5, 2009
We had our monthly business meeting and then we rode in the Wray's large field.

Saturday November 7, 2009
Our whole club went to the Youth Equiday at the Miner Institute.  The topic was the conformation of the horse.

Monday November 9, 2009
Our club provided a fall clean-up community service and spent several hours raking and cleaning up leaves and apples.

TANGLED REINS

SEPTEMBER
One thing some of our parents did in September was the Parent Clinic.  For the Fun Show, most of our club showed and did very well.  Most important, we all had fun!

Also, we had our first meeting of the new year.  We all made apple crisp while the parents filled out lots of paperwork.

We welcomed the following new members to our club this year:  Sarah Faruqui, Courtney Laventure, Curtis Bosley, and Jacqueline Rasco.

We held an election for officers and the results are
President:  Heather Waldenmaier, Vice President:  Holly Waldenmaier, Treasurer:  Christopher Kokes, Secretary:  Abigail Bosley, News Reporter:  Courtney Bosley

We talked about what we are going to do for this year for projects.

OCTOBER
In October our club carved pumpkins for Adirondack Stables’ Haunted Hay Ride.  There was also a covered dish supper with the pumpkin carving fun.

Our members were actively selling cheese for the county fundraiser.

Our club put up a display at Mooers Elementary School for National 4H week.
