Planned tour stops include commercial and seedstock cow/calf operations, feedlots, organic beef production and packing plant, grass finished production and marketing, Pennsylvania Bull Test station, the PSU Beef Experiment station and the Gettysburg Battle Field. Training and hands-on experience in making maple confections, conducted by Stephen Childs, New York State Maple Specialist. COST: $50 per farm for pre-registration or $60 at the door. Class size is limited! This workshop will be suitable for very experienced as well as novice confection-makers. Each participating maple farm will receive a New York State Maple Confections notebook, digital thermometer and appropriate tools for measuring the quality of the maple syrup to be made into confections. Each participant will need to bring one quart of syrup to be used in the program. This is the first in a two-part series of confections workshops part of the Quality Improvement and Market Expansion for New York Maple Value Added Products Project, sponsored by the New York State Farm Viability Institute and Cornell University Maple Program.

Sept 27 Forestry Field Day 8:30am to 12:30pm, Cook Park in Greene. Hands-on sessions on basic woodlot management will be presented throughout the morning. There will be sessions on tree identification, tree volume measurements, selecting trees and managing forest stands for firewood, wildlife habitat management, and creating old growth conditions in forest stands. Each family will receive a field day packet including printed materials, along with a tree measuring stick. COST: $15 for one, $5 for each additional family member (includes materials).
