EatSmart NY

Eat Smart New York! (ESNY) is a nutrition program available to participants in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

In Chemung County, New York, 17% of residents are living in poverty (US. Census Bureau 2012). Low income is associated with numerous health problems, including obesity, chronic disease, and poor pregnancy outcomes. Positive changes in food, nutrition and physical activity practices are integral to avoiding the negative consequences of these health conditions.

The objective of ESNY is to improve the likelihood that persons elIgible for the SNAP program will make healthy food choices within a limited budget and choose physicallyactive lifestyles consistent with the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate.

The goals of the national SNAP-Ed program are to promote:

  • Eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat milk products every day.
  • Being physically active every day as part of a healthy lifestyle.
  • Balancing caloric intake from food and beverages with calories expended.

Classes are conducted typically in small group settings, on topics such as nutrition, meal planning, food preparation, food safety, and food budgeting.
