4-H Award Trips and Educational Opportunities

STARR - The State Teen Action
Who: New York State 4-H Teens (13-19)
Where: New York State Fairgrounds- Syracuse, NY
When: April 18 - 20, 2008
Cost: $65.00 per person

This is a three-day fun-filled event where 4-H teens participate in a variety of workshops and activities meant to challenge, excite and further develop life skills. Overall theme and ideas for workshops and activities come from input and effort of a diverse group of teens and adults serving on the youth/adult STARR planning committee. “Youth Voice” is what keeps STARR contemporary, fresh and in tune with the youth of today. STARR program is open to all NYS 4-H Teens.

Agri-Business Careers Conference
Who: Youth 14 & over
Cost: $60 per delegate
When: Late October

The ABC trip is held in the Cobleskill, New York area and is jointly sponsored by New York state 4-H and New York State Farm bureau and includes 4-H members throughout the state. 4-H youth explore the great diversity of agri-business related careers available in New York. Award winners may visit such businesses as a veterinary hospital, carrot farm, tree nursery, dairy farm and border collie operation. This trip also features insights into opportunities in nature resources and the academic requirements for professional positions in the agri-business world.

Capital Days Trip
Who: 14 & over
Cost: $200 per delegate
When: Early March

This 2-day trip to Albany includes 4-H members from each county in New York State. They learn about state government and the legislative process. They meet with Senators and Assemblymen from their respective districts and tour the Capital Building, NYS Museum, State Court of Appeals and view Albany from the observation deck of the Corning Tower. They learn about career opportunities in government as they tour state agencies, participate in discussion sessions and visit with their legislators.

Career Exploration Trip - Vermont
Ages: 13 & over
Cost: $195 per delegate
When: Mid May

This 2-3 day trip provides 4-H members with an opportunity to explore various home economics related careers. Participants tour the following businesses and schools: University of Vermont, R. Henson Handcrafted Furniture, Billing Farm & Museum, The Vermont Teddy Bear Factory, Ben & Jerry’s, Fat Hat Factory, and the New England Culinary Institute.

Career Explorations - Cornell University
Cost: $180 per delegate
When: July 1-3, 2008

For over 70 years, Cornell Cooperative Extension’s 4-H Youth Development program has conducted a three-day event for youth on the Cornell University campus. The purpose of this program, now called 4-H Career Explorations, is to provide youth with exposure to academic fields and career exploration, to develop leadership skills, to provide hands-on experience in a college setting and to introduce you to Cornell University.

4-H Career Exploration programs allow youth to have fun while learning about science, technology, humanities and… yourself. The event is made up of two grade specific tracts: University U for youth entering grades 8 - 9 and Focus for Teens for youth entering grades 10 - 12.

New York City 4-H Career Exploration
Ages: Teens 15-19
Cost: $650 per person
When: April

This fun-filled, educational trip is centered around 4 days in the “Big Apple.” Activities include a ride to the top of the Empire State Building; ice skating in Rockefeller Plaza, tours of the United Nations, NBC Studios, Lincoln Center, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and the New York Stock Exchange. Participants also see a Broadway play, the Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall and much more.

Citizenship Washington Focus
Ages: 16 & over
Cost: $900 per delegate
When: Early July

Delegates experience five days in Washington D.C. with about 100 4-H’ers from Central New York. This event is centered at the National 4-H Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Several day-long field trips are planned including visits to Capital hill, Arlington Cemetery, Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, Vietnam Memorial, Korean Veterans War Memorial and FDR Memorial. Youth participate in educational workshops and simulations relative to how proposals are funded and public policy is administered.

$50-$75 Flexible Award
Ages: 13 & over
Eligible Members: 6-10

This monetary award may be given to a 4-H youth and applied to Hidden Valley 4-H Camp registration fee or it can be used for any other documented educational program of the member’s choice.
