Description:
To assist low-income residents of the county make healthier food decisions
by providing educational programs with an emphasis on food preparation.
Objectives:
·
Dietary Quality: To motivate participants to adopt eating and lifestyle
behaviors that are consistent with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans
and the Food Guide Pyramid.
·
Food Safety: To improve households' safe handling, preparation, and
storage of food.
·
Shopping Behavior/Food Resource Management: To enhance practices related
to thrifty shopping for the preparation of nutritious foods.
·
Food Security: To insure that low-income individuals and families
have enough to eat without resorting to emergency food assistance.
·
Approach:
· One-On-One Class Series: Meet with adult participant for
four to eight 1.5-hour sessions discussing topics related to the objectives
above. Class series will be designed to meet individual learning needs.
Meal preparation integrated into each session. We can meet in the office
or we do home visits.

Group Class Series: Meet with a group of 2-10 adult participants for
four to eight 2-hour sessions discussing topics related to the objectives
above. Class series will be designed to meet overall needs of the group.
Meal preparation integrated into each session.

Adult Group Presentations: One-time presentation on a nutrition topic
for a small to medium sized group of adults.
·
Youth Group Series: Series of lessons presented to youth groups focusing
on cooking skills competency, basics of nutrition and healthy food choices,
and food safety. Food preparation integrated into each session.

Cost:
Free to individuals meeting income guidelines. Eat Smart New York! provides
all teaching tools and supplies. Cooperating agencies are asked to provide
for food costs.
